Roof Granules and Debris Packed Gutters - Here's the Fix image

Most people don't think about their gutters until something goes wrong - a waterfall over the edge during a storm, staining down the siding, or worse, water pooling near the foundation. By that point, the damage is already in progress. What you're seeing here is a pretty classic example of what builds up over time: a thick layer of roof granules mixed with dirt and organic debris packed into the gutter channel.

Roof granules are one of those things homeowners don't always connect to gutter problems. As asphalt shingles age, they shed those small granules - and every one of them ends up rolling right into the gutter. Mix that with leaves, dust, and moisture, and you get a dense, compacted sludge that water just can't move through. The gutter becomes essentially useless at that point.

That's exactly what we cleared out here. The before side shows a gutter packed with dark, granule-heavy buildup - the kind that sits wet, adds weight to the gutter, and holds moisture against the fascia. The after side tells a different story. Clean channel, clear of debris, ready to move water the way it's supposed to.

This is the kind of maintenance that protects a lot more than just the gutter itself. When water can't flow and drain properly, it backs up under the roofline, runs down the siding, and eventually works its way toward the foundation. A routine cleanout is a straightforward way to protect all of that. It doesn't take long, and it costs a fraction of what water damage repairs do.
